Vintage Neumann U 67
The Legendary Neumann U 67 - Unmatched in Sound and Versatility
The Neumann U 67, introduced in 1960, stands as a true legend in the world of studio microphones. Often imitated but never duplicated, this microphone was and is the cornerstone of the music industry. Its unmistakably smooth sound remains highly coveted to this day.
A Studio Icon
Taking over from the illustrious Neumann U 47 was no small feat, but the U 67 quickly established itself as the new studio standard. Packed with innovative features like three selectable polar patterns and advanced tube circuitry with low-cut and pad switches, the U 67 was a versatile powerhouse. Even today, top-level engineers consider it their "desert island" microphone, thanks to its unparalleled sound quality and adaptability.
Neumann Engineering Excellence
The U 67 is equipped with the renowned K 67 capsule, synonymous with the distinctive "Neumann sound." Its tube circuitry incorporates a clever pre-emphasis/de-emphasis scheme to minimize tube hiss. Notably, the U 67 was the first microphone to address modern recording techniques like close-miking. Its switchable low-cut filter compensates for proximity effect, and the preattenuation feature enables it to handle sound pressure levels of up to 124 dB without distortion.
Versatility Beyond Compare
The U 67 is a universal studio microphone, excelling in various applications. Its smooth top-end with a subtle tube shimmer makes it an exceptional choice for vocals. With three polar patterns (omni, cardioid, and figure-8), it adapts effortlessly to a wide range of instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, drums, acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, and upright bass.
- Superb vocal microphone for male and female singers.
- Versatile microphone suitable for all kinds of instruments.
The U 67 is hailed as the best studio microphone ever made, capable of capturing the essence of any instrument or voice. Its legacy includes iconic recordings, from Sir Paul McCartney's "Hey Jude" to Nirvana's "Nevermind" album. While many microphones have attempted to mimic the U 67, none can truly compare.
Back in the 1960s, the U 67 marked a pivotal moment for Neumann and recording as a whole. Its ability to withstand high sound pressure levels revolutionized close-miking techniques. Today, it remains one of the most sought-after microphones, ideal for acoustic instruments and vocal recordings.
