Auralex 4" Studiofoam Wedge Panels

Foam thickness is one of the most misunderstood variables in acoustic treatment. Thinner foam handles mid and high frequencies effectively but does almost nothing for low-end energy. The Auralex 4" Studiofoam Wedge panels are the choice when a room has serious low-frequency problems — pronounced bass buildup, room modes, or boom that thinner panels can't touch. At 4" thickness these panels deliver three times the low-end control of 2" panels and achieve an NRC rating of 1.10, meaning they absorb more sound energy than they receive — a result of the wedge geometry scattering and trapping sound within the foam structure.

When 4" Is the Right Choice

Standard 2" foam handles flutter echo and mid/high reflections well. But in rooms with significant low-end issues — drum booths, rooms with parallel walls and hard floors, mastering rooms, forensic audio labs, and large spaces like gymnasiums and concert halls — 2" foam simply doesn't reach deep enough into the frequency spectrum to solve the problem. The 4" Studiofoam wedge addresses these environments where sonic accuracy at low frequencies is critical.

In some applications, sufficient coverage with 4" Studiofoam can reduce the need for dedicated bass trapping — the added thickness handles enough low-frequency energy that separate corner treatment becomes less critical. This makes 4" panels a practical and space-efficient solution for challenging rooms.

Practical Details

Each panel measures 2' x 4' x 4". A pack of 6 panels covers 48 square feet. Mounting adhesive is not included — Auralex recommends 1 can of Foamtak or 2 tubes of Tubetak for installation.
